Human Rights beyond the Liberal Script: A Morphological Approach

Abstract While recent scholarship has turned to the increasing fragmentation of global human rights discourses, often competing ideological projects in which different understandings are embedded have received comparatively scant attention. Instead, treated as isolated norms. Although isolated, norms frequently simultaneously understood against implicit backdrop liberal assumptions about political order and agency, thereby obscuring alternative conceptions. This research note seeks move our understanding beyond script. Drawing on advances fields intellectual history theory, it develops a morphological approach that treats not only individual standards appropriate behavior but complex units meanings. These meanings emerge larger ideational formations varying notions temporarily fixed through their positioning toward other concepts. part conceptual arrangements allows for analysis script shows by way two illustrative case studies, focus democracy rule law well ontologically singular.
